A recent news story from the UK talked about laptop rentals and the role they play in helping people control their spending. As it turns out, laptop rentals aren't the only thing available to the credit-starved. They can rent garden tools, washing machines, even designer handbags and big-screen TVs.
What is the advantage of renting these items? Most people want these items for short-term use or a special occasion. For handbags, think of a special night out at a charity ball or New Year's party. For TVs, think of the Super Bowl. Instead of laying out a lot of cash to buy these things, people can rent them for a low fee and then return them.
A whole industry has emerged around this concept in the UK, with people not only renting things they can't afford to buy, but also renting out items they already own that might be of interest to other people. Think underwater camera or, again, the luxury designer handbag.
Of course, rentals are nothing new in the business world. Corporate laptop rentals have been available for many years. Laptop rentals offer the same benefits as the rentals of personal items described above - short-term access to the latest brand-name technology, no capital outlay, and the convenience of returning the equipment when you are done.
Much like the person who rents a hedge trimmer a couple of times a year instead of buying, businesses use laptop rentals for occasional travel and short-term needs.
If you have a perfectly good desktop but you need to attend a conference once a year, why bother buying a laptop? The amount of use it gets hardly justifies the cost. Besides, when you rent a laptop, you can obtain brand new technology that will perform well and impress your clients and colleagues.
Compare the potential costs. A rental could cost you in the area of $200 for a week. Purchasing a laptop and all of the software and peripherals you need would cost at least five times that amount, if not more.
The person who rents the latest "it" handbag does so to impress. Businesspeople who want to present an image of success can do so by renting the latest laptop. With newer technology, you can get fast performance that makes your business look good.
Like the person who rents the large plasma TV for one occasion, the business that chooses laptop rentals can also choose a display with visibility and a real "wow" factor. If you are attending a conference as a vendor, an LCD or plasma screen in your tradeshow booth can draw attention and traffic. Most rental agencies that deal with computers will also rent displays.
If you require technology for occasional business travel but need to stick to a budget, laptop rentals are a great option. They are a cost-effective and convenient way to get the equipment you need at the exact time you need it.
